Karyatid from Lesser Propylaia

Images from the Lesser Propylaia at Eleusis

A karyatid, which would have been located just inside the structure.  This is one of a pair, which were standing just inside the Lesser Propylaia, built around 50 BC.  This is believed to represent a priestess of the Eleusinian Mysteries, carrying a basket on her head.  Note that among the symbols on the basket we see a poppy.

The above photo is of some decorations on the Lesser Propylaia.  Again, note the flowers (poppy?) and the ears of grain.

The Lesser Propylaia served as the northern gate to the sanctuary of Eleusis.  One would pass through this if approaching from the Sacred Way.

The word "karyatid" simply means a architectural support, shaped like a female figure.  Many other buildings also similar supports, the most famous of which were on the Acropolis.
