Gitana's Shrine to Zeus Ktesios

  Shrine to Zeus Ktesios

Zeus Ktesios is the god who protects one's pantry.  In ancient times, bottles filled with olive oil, water, and fruits were dedicated to him & kept in the home's pantry.

I thought it would be nice to try to do something similar today.  Although we don't have any evidence of what these bottles looked like (that I know of) I had a small amphora with a screw-on cap that seemed just right for this project.  I used modeling clay to make the snake, because in this aspect Zeus was thought to take on a serpent form.  On the front I wrote in Greek "Zeus Ktesios."  The bottle is filled with olive oil, water, a variety of dried fruits, and a few fresh pieces such as lemon slices and grapes.  I also included barley and spices.  It really smells nice!

In the picture above it is sitting out in my kitchen, but I usually keep it tucked in the back of a kitchen cabinet.

I actually made three of these and gave the other two to special friends.

You might make something similar yourself, as it really wasn't that hard at all!

May Zeus Ktesios bless your home!
